To the Lake District

We started out trip to the Lake District, which is in Cumbria, in northwest England.

On the way we stopped at Comford in Derbyshire.  The attraction was the Scarthin Book Shop, which is piled high with heaps of every possible kind of book.  The sign on the door gives a clue as to its eclectic nature.  The pond is directly across the street from the book stop.

In the Peak District (south of the Lake District), we took some back roads through some of the peaks and valleys.  The fields are separated by dry stone walls, as are the fields in New England.  Further south, the fields are separated by hedges.

This was the view out the window of the hotel restaurant where we ate lunch, in Over Haddon, Derbyshire.  The sheep have a vast expanse of pasture to graze.  In the second photo, it's raining hard.  The sheep don't seem to notice.

Arrival at the Lake District.  This is Cinder Hill, the house in which we are staying, and the view from the garden.  The garden contains a croquet pitch (if that's the right term), which we hope to use at some point.
